Chelsea players are reportedly facing substantial salary reductions after contractual clauses linked to European qualification were activated following the club's disappointing Premier League campaign.
According to reports from Spain, many members of the squad have seen their wages significantly reduced after Chelsea failed to qualify for any UEFA competition, including the UEFA Champions League.
The situation has reportedly created tension inside the dressing room ahead of the new season under head coach Xabi Alonso.
Contracts linked to European qualification
The report claims Chelsea included clauses in a number of player contracts that automatically reduce salaries if the club fails to qualify for European competition.
Those clauses have now come into effect after Chelsea finished only 10th in the Premier League, missing out on Europe entirely.
Some players were reportedly unaware of the extent of the financial consequences until the new season began.
According to the report, certain salaries have been cut by as much as 50% or even two-thirds, dramatically reducing earnings that had previously reflected Chelsea's status among Europe's elite clubs.
Agents seek solutions
The reported pay cuts have already prompted some player representatives to contact Chelsea's hierarchy.
According to the report, agents have either requested that the club reconsider the contractual terms or asked to negotiate transfer fees that would allow their clients to leave.
Chelsea's ownership, however, is said to have adopted a firm position.
"That's fine, but anyone who wants to leave must bring in at least what we paid for him."
The report claims that Enzo Fernández, for example, would only be allowed to leave if a club matched the €120 million Chelsea paid Benfica to sign the Argentine midfielder.
Several stars affected
Among the players reportedly impacted by the clauses are Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, João Pedro and Enzo Fernández.
Speculation over the futures of Palmer and Fernández has already intensified, with reports suggesting both players could attract significant interest if the situation remains unresolved.
Chelsea are preparing for their first season under Xabi Alonso, but the contract issue has created an unexpected challenge before the campaign has even begun.
Whether the wage reductions ultimately lead to player departures could become one of the biggest stories of Chelsea's summer.
