Chelsea are ready to offload Wesley Fofana, their €80m defender plagued by injuries, having played only 34 games since arriving from Leicester in 2022.

Chelsea are preparing to cut their losses on Wesley Fofana, the French defender signed for a staggering €80 million from Leicester City in August 2022, after what’s turning out to be one of the club’s most disappointing transfer moves in recent years.

Almost three years since becoming one of the most expensive centre-backs in history, Fofana has managed just 34 appearances for Chelsea, largely sidelined by persistent injuries. This season alone, he’s featured just 14 times, remaining a peripheral figure despite his price tag and salary.

With his market value now down to €27 million — nearly a third of what Chelsea paid — the Blues are struggling to find suitors willing to take on his wages and injury record. According to English media, Marseille, the club from Fofana’s hometown, are open to taking him on loan with shared salary costs.

Meanwhile, clubs from Saudi Arabia have also emerged as potential options, though even they have grown more selective and cautious with big-money signings in recent transfer windows.

Despite Enzo Maresca’s reported belief in Fofana’s potential, the Chelsea hierarchy appear determined to explore exit routes this summer. With the club needing to balance their books and rebuild the squad, finding a solution for Fofana’s situation is seen as a priority.
