Chelsea are gearing up for the winter transfer window, and coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that at least two first-team players could depart, including Carney Chukwuemeka.
The 21-year-old midfielder has struggled for opportunities this season, failing to make a single Premier League appearance and logging just 130 minutes across other competitions.
Chukwuemeka’s move away from Stamford Bridge marks a sharp turn for a player who showed immense promise at Aston Villa. Chelsea secured his signature in 2022 for €18 million, beating competition from top clubs like Barcelona and AC Milan, who had been heavily linked with the Austrian-born midfielder of Nigerian heritage.
When Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea, he signed a long-term contract running until the summer of 2028. However, his lack of playing time and stalled development indicate that he will likely leave the club earlier than expected. Maresca’s decision signals Chelsea’s intent to reshape their squad during the transfer window, with left-back Ben Chilwell also expected to depart.
Chukwuemeka, once considered one of England’s brightest young talents, may now seek a fresh start elsewhere. Clubs from across Europe are expected to monitor his situation closely, with January providing an opportunity for the midfielder to revive his career.
