Raheem Sterling is considering an exit from Chelsea after being frozen out, with Napoli monitoring a possible move as they seek attacking reinforcements under strict financial limits.
Raheem Sterling, Chelsea’s highest-paid player, is seriously considering leaving Stamford Bridge as he looks to escape what has become a career standstill. The 31-year-old winger has not played a single minute since returning from his loan spell at Arsenal at the end of last season, and Napoli have emerged as a potential destination, according to reports from Italy.
Sterling seeks a way out
Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport reports that Sterling is determined to leave London and terminate what is described as a “golden cage” contract that has kept him away from regular football. At 31, the England international is eager to return to consistent match action, and his profile as an experienced, versatile attacker has caught Napoli’s attention.
Sterling remains Chelsea’s top earner, a factor that complicates any potential move. Napoli had already shown interest during the summer 2025 transfer window, and his name has now resurfaced as sporting director Giovanni Manna searches for cost-effective attacking solutions.
Zero-balance policy shapes Napoli’s plans
Any move for Sterling depends entirely on Napoli’s ability to generate funds through player sales. The club’s ownership has imposed a strict “zero-balance” rule for the January window, meaning no signings can be completed unless they are fully financed by outgoing transfers.
Several departures are already being explored. Giuseppe Ambrosino is expected to join Venezia on loan with a €2 million purchase option that becomes mandatory if promotion to Serie A is secured.
Defender Alessandro Marianucci has attracted interest from Cremonese and Torino. Torino are reportedly willing to offer a loan with a €20 million option to buy — a significant potential profit given Napoli signed him from Empoli for €9 million.
Lucca sale could unlock the window
The key operation that could determine Napoli’s January business is the sale of striker Lorenzo Lucca. Napoli invested €35 million to sign him from Udinese — €9 million for the loan and €26 million as a mandatory purchase — and Benfica have shown strong interest.
Negotiations have stalled over valuation, with Napoli initially demanding €30 million, a figure Benfica consider excessive. Nottingham Forest are also monitoring the situation. Napoli are open to letting Lucca leave, potentially on an expensive loan with an option to buy, but only once a replacement is secured.
Injury concerns and alternative targets
Napoli’s need for attacking reinforcements has been intensified by the injury situation of Romelu Lukaku, who is reportedly still far from returning after suffering a serious thigh injury in August.
Agents have offered Artem Dovbyk, but the Roma forward recently picked up an injury against Lecce and is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks. With a demanding schedule across multiple competitions, Napoli are reluctant to sign a player who is not immediately available.
Another option under consideration is Evan Ferguson, currently on loan at Roma from Brighton. Sterling, however, remains an intriguing alternative — a potential short-term solution to add experience and depth if the financial puzzle can be solved.
