Benfica are reconsidering Ángel Di María’s renewal due to recurring injuries, though the Argentine is expected to stay through the Club World Cup in June.

Ángel Di María's second spell at Benfica may be nearing its end. The 37-year-old Argentine is no longer the untouchable figure he was a year ago, as recurring injuries and limited availability have led the club to reconsider his future. According to A Bola, contract renewal talks have stalled, raising the possibility that the Portuguese giants could part ways with one of their highest-paid players.

This weekend brought yet another setback for Di María, who was forced off in the 53rd minute due to pain in his right thigh. It’s already his third injury of 2025, and the veteran winger has now missed 11 matches this year alone. Despite his talent and pedigree, the frequency of his injuries—combined with his annual €4 million salary—is making his continued presence at the club harder to justify.

Coach Bruno Lage still values Di María’s experience and flair, but acknowledges the reality: the Argentine has gradually shifted into a secondary role due to his physical limitations.

However, one thing is clear: Benfica have no intention of cutting ties before the FIFA Club World Cup. Di María remains a key figure for that international stage, where he could receive a proper farewell befitting his career. Benfica will face Boca Juniors in their tournament opener on June 17, a matchup with added emotional significance for the Rosario-born star.

Just a year ago, the situation was very different. Benfica had pleaded with Di María to accept a contract renewal amid interest from other clubs. He chose to stay, reaffirming his connection with Lisbon. Now, as uncertainty clouds his future, the Club World Cup could serve as his final curtain call.
