Ilkay Gündogan has returned to Manchester City after just one season at Barcelona, with conflicting explanations from Gündogan and Barcelona president Joan Laporta about the reasons behind the move.
Ilkay Gündogan, the experienced German midfielder, spent only one season with Barcelona before returning to Manchester City this summer. Gündogan, who played a crucial role during his time in Spain, stated that his departure was primarily due to Barcelona's ongoing financial issues, which even made it difficult for the club to register new signings like Dani Olmo.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta provided a different narrative, suggesting that Gündogan's exit was driven by sporting reasons. Laporta claimed that Gündogan and Olmo play in similar positions, and after discussions with coach Hansi Flick, Gündogan decided to move back to Manchester City. Laporta emphasized that the decision was made by Gündogan himself, based on his preference for a change.
Despite these differing accounts, it's clear that Gündogan remains an important player, having already made two appearances for Manchester City in the Premier League since his return.
