After Portugal’s Nations League win, Cristiano Ronaldo publicly defended 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, urging the media and fans to give the young star time and space to grow.
Cristiano Ronaldo might have led Portugal to a dramatic Nations League final victory over Spain, but his post-match message wasn’t one of triumph—it was one of support for rising star Lamine Yamal.
Yamal, who won the European Championship with Spain last year, returned to a major final, only to experience defeat this time around. Still only 17 years old, the Barcelona winger is already seen as one of the brightest talents in world football.
Ronaldo, who lifted the Nations League trophy for the second time in his career, had nothing but praise for the teenager after the final in Munich.
“Lamine will win many more awards and laurels, individually and collectively. He is a phenomenon! He will have a long career, he will win many national leagues. He is 17 years old! Please leave him alone. I have to ask you to give him space. He needs to stay calm,” said Ronaldo.
Yamal later posted a photo alongside Ronaldo on social media with the caption: “Respect, legend.” The two shared a warm exchange despite their generational difference—one legend nearing the end of his journey, the other just beginning his rise.
