Cristiano Ronaldo has said he does not agree that Lionel Messi is the GOAT, responding to Wayne Rooney’s opinion during a new interview with Piers Morgan.
Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly stated that he does not agree with the claim that Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time. The Al-Nassr forward discussed the long-running debate during a new interview with Piers Morgan.
In the preview clip for the upcoming episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Ronaldo was asked whether Messi is the GOAT. The 39-year-old replied directly: “Messi better than me? I don’t agree with that opinion. I don’t want to be humble.”
The interview marks one of the rare occasions where Ronaldo has addressed the comparison without deflection. For nearly two decades, the Portuguese and Argentine superstars have been central to the defining rivalry of modern football.
Ronaldo was also reminded of past comments from his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney, who previously stated he believed Messi had the edge. Ronaldo made clear that he held no personal issue with Rooney’s view, saying: “It doesn’t pose any problem for me.”
Rooney has since clarified his position, stressing that admiring Messi’s style does not diminish his respect for Ronaldo. Speaking recently, Rooney said he has always valued Ronaldo’s longevity and goalscoring mentality, calling him “an absolute genius.”
Despite turning 40 in February, Ronaldo remains one of the most prolific forwards in world football. He has scored nine goals in his first ten matches of the 2025-26 season across all competitions for Al-Nassr.
Ronaldo’s next major target remains the 2026 World Cup, likely to be his final chance to compete for the only major trophy missing from his career. His club, meanwhile, sit top of the Saudi Pro League with a four-point advantage over second-placed Al-Taawoun.
Part one of Ronaldo’s interview with Morgan will be released on November 4, with further details expected to expand on his views regarding legacy, rivalry and future ambitions.
