Cristiano Ronaldo skipped Diogo Jota’s funeral in agreement with the family to avoid diverting attention. He has privately reached out and pledged full support to Jota’s loved ones.

Cristiano Ronaldo faced criticism in Portugal for not attending the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, but reports confirm his absence was both deliberate and respectful.

The funeral was held in Gondomar and attended by many national team players, coaches, and football dignitaries. However, Ronaldo’s absence sparked backlash from social media users and local press, with some questioning the captain’s silence at the emotional event.

According to respected newspaper Record, the 40-year-old veteran made the decision not to attend after consulting Jota’s family. The intention, the report states, was to avoid drawing attention away from the grieving family, especially after a disturbing moment when Liverpool players were booed outside the church.

Ronaldo, who is currently in Mallorca, Spain, reportedly contacted Jota’s wife and parents personally and offered his full support. He also publicly paid tribute shortly after the news broke, writing a heartfelt message that expressed his shock and sorrow.

“Cristiano made the choice out of respect,” Record wrote, emphasizing that his relationship with Jota was strong, and they had most recently celebrated winning the UEFA Nations League together last month, when Portugal defeated Spain in the final.

Though he wasn't present at the service, those close to the situation say Ronaldo has done everything he can to support the family—just away from cameras and crowds.
