Cristiano Ronaldo has been tipped to retire “when Lionel Messi stops,” with critics warning the 40-year-old could be tarnishing his legacy by continuing for too long.
Cristiano Ronaldo, now 40, continues to lead the line for Al-Nassr and Portugal, but debate is intensifying over when the legendary forward should call time on his glittering career. While still contributing goals and chasing the 1,000-goal milestone, some believe the time has come for him to step aside.
Former Chelsea and Netherlands striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes Ronaldo’s continued presence may be harming his lasting image, especially with Portugal preparing for the next generation of stars.
“Football doesn’t need Ronaldo at the 2026 World Cup,” Hasselbaink told Gambling Zone. “I think he’s doing more harm than good by still playing for Portugal – it’s impacting his legacy.”
“Messi or Ronaldo? I will always say Ronaldo because of what he had to overcome and achieve. But there comes a time when you need to walk away. I think that time came a while ago. I believe he will retire when Messi decides to stop.”
Ronaldo’s unmatched longevity
Ronaldo has racked up 218 caps and 135 international goals for Portugal, making him the most capped and top-scoring player in the nation’s history. Despite his age, he remains a regular call-up and is targeting the 2026 World Cup.
While many admire his drive and professionalism, others argue that he is no longer the best option tactically. “Some games need pressing, others demand different styles. I don’t think he can do that anymore,” said Hasselbaink. “There’s no shame in that. Playing at 40 is already a landmark.”
For now, Ronaldo remains focused on both Nations League glory and reaching new career milestones, refusing to slow down while he still believes in his ability to make a positive impact.
