Cruzeiro have completed a record-breaking €27m signing of Gerson from Zenit, making him the most expensive player in Brazilian football history.
Brazilian football has officially entered a new financial era. Cruzeiro have confirmed the signing of Brazil international Gerson from Zenit in a deal worth €27 million, the highest transfer fee ever paid by a club in Brazil.
While Brazilian clubs still trail Europe’s elite in raw spending power, the gap has narrowed significantly in recent years. That shift is reflected clearly in the league’s transfer records, which have begun to fall at an accelerating pace.
For 15 years, the benchmark stood at €15 million, paid by Corinthians for Carlos Tevez in 2005. That record finally fell in 2020 when Gabriel Barbosa joined Flamengo for €17 million.
After a brief pause, the market exploded. In 2024, Thiago Almada moved to Botafogo for €24 million. A year later, Vitor Roque returned from Barcelona to Palmeiras in a deal exceeding €25 million.
Now, Gerson has raised the bar again.
Homecoming instead of Europe
The 27-year-old midfielder arrives from Zenit, having previously been linked with a return to Europe’s top leagues. During his career, Gerson has already featured for Roma, Fiorentina and Marseille, but ultimately opted to return home.
A product of Fluminense, Gerson now becomes the most expensive signing in Brazilian football history and a statement acquisition for Cruzeiro, who are clearly aiming to re-establish themselves among the country’s elite.
Major deal for Zenit as well
From Zenit’s perspective, the move ranks as the fourth-largest sale in club history. Only Leandro Paredes, Hulk and Malcom (who cost €60 million) were transferred for higher fees.
For Brazilian football, however, the headline is clear: the domestic market has never spent like this before—and Gerson’s return marks a historic turning point.
