One name is now being mentioned more and more often: Dani Ceballos.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been at Real Madrid since 2017, with only a two-year loan spell at Arsenal breaking up his time in the Spanish capital.
Despite 209 appearances in a Real Madrid shirt and 17 games in all competitions this season, it is hard to argue that Ceballos has ever truly fulfilled the promise he showed during his brilliant years at Real Betis.
Since 2021, he has been a permanent member of the squad — but also a permanent rotation and bench option, regardless of the coach or the system.
Five years of waiting for a real breakthrough is a long time. And at 29, Ceballos knows his prime years are not endless.
Now, a familiar face is calling.
According to Spanish media, Unai Emery wants to bring Ceballos to Aston Villa, a club that has grown into one of the most competitive teams in England under the Spanish coach.
Emery knows Ceballos well. The two worked together at Arsenal, and the midfielder has never hidden how much that relationship meant to him.
"I didn't go to Arsenal just because of the size of the club, but because Unai Emery came to my house and told me how much he appreciated me," Ceballos once said.
"He told me he loved my style of play from my Betis days. The coach’s trust is extremely important because that’s how every player gives their maximum. He told me I would be an important player, and that’s why I didn’t hesitate."
That trust is exactly what Ceballos has rarely felt in Madrid.
At Real Madrid, he has collected trophies, medals, and appearances — but never a clear, central role.
A move to Aston Villa would mean something different: responsibility, continuity, and a chance to be more than just a rotation piece.
For Real Madrid, this could be one of the first squad-shaping decisions of the Arbeloa era.
For Ceballos, it may finally be time to choose football over comfort.
