Former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has opened up about his unique bond with Claudio Ranieri, praising the Italian as more than just a coach and predicting success for his current club, AS Roma.
Danny Drinkwater, a key figure in Leicester City’s historic 2015/16 Premier League-winning squad, remains forever linked to one of football’s greatest underdog stories. Despite his career struggles following that incredible season, the retired midfielder reflected on his time under Claudio Ranieri, who he describes as a father, grandfather, and friend.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport ahead of Roma’s crucial Europa League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Drinkwater detailed the profound impact Ranieri had on his life, both professionally and personally.
“I had a fantastic relationship with Ranieri during my time at Leicester. With a harmony that went beyond the simple comparison between player and coach, he is a person with whom you can confide, discuss, and reflect not only on football topics,” Drinkwater said, as relayed by Il Romanista.
He added: “I can simply say that for me he was like a father, a grandfather, and a friend, as well as a top-level coach who led us to win a championship.”
Ranieri’s Return to Roma
Ranieri, now leading AS Roma, has returned to the club he loves, hoping to restore their glory. Drinkwater expressed confidence in Ranieri’s ability to bring success back to the Giallorossi, emphasizing that the club belongs in the Champions League.
“It is really nice to see him back in the colours of the club he loves. I am sure that the players will think the same. I hope he can take the club where it deserves to be: in Europe absolutely, but Roma is a club that should always be in the Champions League. He will succeed in this last feat.”
The Challenge Ahead
Roma’s performance against Tottenham will serve as a key test for Ranieri’s team, who have struggled in Serie A this season, currently sitting in the bottom half of the table. In the Europa League, they have secured just one victory so far, highlighting the uphill battle that lies ahead.
For Drinkwater, however, the belief in Ranieri remains unwavering—a testament to the Italian’s ability to inspire loyalty and admiration wherever he goes.
