David Beckham appeared in high spirits at Wimbledon despite his bandaged wrist, recently been operated on to fix a long-standing injury from 2003. He posed for selfies and mingled with stars.
David Beckham was all smiles as he returned to England for the first day of Wimbledon, days after undergoing wrist surgery to treat an injury from 2003. The 50-year-old football legend arrived at the All England Club in a stylish navy suit, cradling his bandaged left hand in a sling.
The injury stems from a fracture sustained during a friendly match against South Africa more than two decades ago. An X-ray recently revealed that a screw placed during his original surgery had not dissolved properly, leaving Beckham in “unbearable” pain. He underwent corrective surgery and is now in recovery.
“It’s fine. It was an old injury that needed surgery but it’s all good,” Beckham said to DAZN while attending Wimbledon.
The football icon, who had recently been in Atlanta to watch Inter Miami lose to Paris Saint-Germain, returned to the UK just in time for Day One at SW19. He shared a viral selfie with Maria Sharapova, captioned by the tennis star with “Let the games begin”. Fans gushed over the moment: “The hottest sports selfie of all time,” one user commented.
Beckham’s wife Victoria had shared the news of his surgery on Instagram, posting a hospital-bed photo and the message: “Get well soon Daddy.”
Despite the wrist issue, Beckham said the real problem is his back and left hip, adding in an interview with *Men’s Health*: “I’ve had it X-rayed, MRI’d — it’s just wear and tear.” He also admitted that frequent cortisone injections throughout his career may have caused long-term damage. “Certain parts of my body were a real mess,” he reflected.
The Royal Box and VIP areas on Wimbledon’s opening day were packed with celebrities including Rochelle and Marvin Humes, Sam Thompson, Rachel Stevens, and Christopher O’Dowd. Beckham’s appearance was among the highlights, despite his visible signs of football’s physical toll.
