Diego Maradona’s childhood home has taken on a new role, becoming a soup kitchen for families in need in Villa Fiorito, one of the poorest areas of Buenos Aires.
The house where the Argentina legend grew up no longer belongs to his family, but it remains a powerful symbol of his life and story.
Today, the modest property is helping the local community during a period of economic hardship, with residents lining up daily for food.
The transformation reflects the current situation in Argentina, where many people are struggling to meet basic needs.
Leonardo Fabian Alvarez, a pastor who runs the initiative, described the scale of the crisis.
“We have increased food requests by about 300 percent. People have lost their jobs and come in shame to collect food. We had never seen this before,” he said.
The yard of the house has been opened to volunteers, who prepare and distribute meals to those most affected.
Despite the change, the legacy of Maradona remains visible. A mural still covers the facade, showing his image alongside the words “The House of God”.
The site was officially declared a national historic landmark in 2021, ensuring its cultural importance is preserved.
Maradona, who died in November 2020 at the age of 60, remains one of the most iconic figures in football history.
He played for clubs such as Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Napoli, where his impact was so profound that the club renamed its stadium in his honor.
Beyond his achievements on the pitch, his life was marked by personal struggles, including battles with health and addiction.
He also coached Argentina, leading the national team to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals.
Now, in the place where his journey began, his story continues differently.
The house that once shaped a legend is now helping others survive, linking Maradona’s legacy with the daily reality of the community he came from.
