Dwight McNeil was left distressed after a £20m move to Crystal Palace collapsed on deadline day, with his girlfriend accusing the football industry of cruelty and a lack of respect for players’ mental health.
Dwight McNeil was left devastated after a proposed deadline-day move to Crystal Palace collapsed without explanation, despite the Everton winger completing a medical and expecting the transfer to be finalised.
The 26-year-old was set to join the south London club on loan, with a £20 million obligation to buy. A deal sheet was submitted, but the transfer failed when the necessary paperwork was not completed before the deadline.
Everton sources insist they fulfilled their side of the agreement, claiming Palace went silent during the final stages. With time running out, the move collapsed.
The emotional impact was laid bare by Megan Sharpley, McNeil’s girlfriend, who shared a series of powerful messages on Instagram.
"To have something promised to you, to be dragged along on an emotional rollercoaster and then have it torn away at the last second with no explanation has been heartbreaking," she wrote.
"No phone call, no communication. Just silence. Dwight was left confused, distressed and in tears," she added.
Sharpley spoke at length about the human cost of transfers, rejecting the idea that a player’s salary removes the right to feel pain.
"He is a human being. Money does not protect you from heartbreak. Football should never accept playing with people’s mental health as part of the job," she said.
She also highlighted the irony of the situation.
"We talk so much about mental health, but when it comes to footballers, people think it is acceptable to mess with their emotions," Sharpley continued.
The post also referenced her own serious illness in December 2023, when she required urgent surgery after being diagnosed with a large ovarian tumour. McNeil was praised for his unwavering support during that period.
McNeil later broke his silence by sharing his partner’s message.
"Even now I am still left in the dark. What I do know is that I am an Everton player and I will use this as motivation," he wrote.
"I love you and thank you for all your support," McNeil added.
The winger joined Everton from Burnley in 2022 and made 120 appearances for the club. Despite the collapse of the move, his immediate future remains at Goodison Park.
The episode once again exposed the harsh reality of the transfer window. For Dwight McNeil, it ended not with a new beginning, but with unanswered questions and raw emotion.
