Edin Džeko has reportedly agreed a new one-year contract with Schalke, committing his future to the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2027.

Edin Džeko has decided where he will continue his career. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Bosnia and Herzegovina captain has agreed a new one-year contract with Schalke, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.
The 40-year-old striker reportedly turned down opportunities to return to Serie A, move to Major League Soccer and join several other Bundesliga clubs, choosing instead to remain in Gelsenkirchen.
The agreement comes after weeks of uncertainty.
Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann recently admitted the club was unsure whether it could afford to keep the experienced forward because of financial constraints. However, Baumann and Džeko reportedly met in Dubrovnik, where they finalised the details of the new deal.
Head coach Miron Muslić had already hinted that an agreement was close following Schalke's friendly victory over Okayama.
"We need characters, leaders and players who set an example both on and off the pitch. Someone with exactly those qualities is arriving soon," Muslić said, in comments widely interpreted as a reference to Džeko's renewal.
Džeko joined Schalke during last winter's transfer window and played an important role in the club's promotion back to the Bundesliga.
In the second half of last season, he scored six goals and provided three assists, before representing Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He will now lead Schalke's attack as the club prepares for its return to Germany's top flight.
By extending his career, Džeko follows another Balkan football icon, Luka Modrić, who also recently signed a new contract with AC Milan and will continue playing at the highest level into his forties.
Age continues to be little more than a number for one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's greatest footballers, whose remarkable career is set to continue for at least one more season.
