Edin Terzić becomes Athletic Club’s new coach, replacing Ernesto Valverde and signing until 2028 as the club turns to a foreign manager again.
Edin Terzić has been appointed as the new head coach of Athletic Club, with the Basque side confirming the change ahead of next season.
The 43-year-old will take over after the departure of Ernesto Valverde, who announced in March that he will step down following four years in charge.
Terzić has agreed a contract until June 30, 2028, showing a long-term commitment from the club.
His arrival also signals a shift, as Athletic Club will have a foreign coach for the first time since 2018.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager becomes only the second German coach in the club’s history, after Jupp Heynckes.
Terzić brings strong experience from his time in Germany. He won the German Cup in 2021 and came close to winning the Bundesliga title in 2023.
His biggest success came in 2024, when he led Dortmund to the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.
After that defeat, he stepped away from coaching and has not managed a team since, making this his return to the bench.
Athletic Club studied several candidates in recent months. A return for Andoni Iraola was discussed, but the club decided to move in a different direction.
The role presents a unique challenge. Athletic’s identity is built on using only Basque players, a rare policy in top European football.
For Terzić, this will be his first experience in Spanish football, where adapting to the club’s philosophy will be key.
