Jan Oblak sparked speculation over his future at Atletico Madrid after suggesting that his long stay in Spain may not continue.
Jan Oblak has raised fresh questions about his future at Atletico Madrid, hinting that his 12-year spell with the Spanish club may not be guaranteed to continue.
The Slovenian goalkeeper made the comments after Atletico’s final home match against Girona, immediately triggering speculation in Spain over a possible summer departure.
“You never know what can happen”
Atletico are expected to undergo significant changes this summer. Antoine Griezmann’s departure has already been confirmed, while uncertainty continues to surround several key figures within the squad.
Now attention has shifted toward one of the club’s most untouchable names of the last decade.
Speaking after the match, Oblak offered a response that quickly drew attention.
“I always say you never know what can happen in the future. I have a contract, but summer is always long,” he told DAZN.
The 32-year-old remains under contract until 2028, meaning he still has two years left on his current deal.
A true Atletico legend
Oblak has spent 12 years in Madrid and established himself as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Atletico history.
He holds a unique record in La Liga, having won the Zamora Trophy six times — more than any goalkeeper before him.
His longevity has also moved him high into the club’s all-time appearance rankings.
With 538 matches, Oblak currently sits third in Atletico history behind only Adelardo and Koke. If he features against Villarreal in the final round, he will move to within just 14 appearances of second place.
Could Juan Musso change the picture?
Another factor creating intrigue is the rise of Juan Musso.
During Oblak’s recent rib injury, the Argentine goalkeeper stepped in and reportedly impressed Spanish media with his performances.
Musso delivered solid displays not only in routine fixtures but also in high-profile matches against Barcelona in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League.
One decision in particular raised eyebrows when coach Diego Simeone selected Musso against Osasuna, despite both goalkeepers being available.
There is also a financial aspect to the situation.
Oblak remains Atletico’s highest-paid player, reportedly earning around €10.4 million net per season, a figure that may become increasingly relevant as the club prepares for a major rebuild.
For now, no decision has been made — but Oblak’s words have ensured one thing: a summer that suddenly looks much more interesting.
