Said El Mala has ended months of transfer speculation by signing a new five-year contract with Cologne, who rejected the chance to cash in on their teenage star.

The long-running transfer saga surrounding Said El Mala is over. Despite interest from several major European clubs, the 19-year-old winger has decided to remain with Cologne.
El Mala has signed a new contract running until the summer of 2031, giving Cologne long-term control over one of the most highly rated young players in German football.
The club has also given its teenage star another sign of his growing importance. El Mala will wear the prestigious No.10 shirt from the new season.
It represents a remarkable outcome after a summer dominated by speculation about his future.
Several major clubs from the Bundesliga and Premier League were interested in signing the German youngster, and Cologne faced the possibility of losing him after his breakthrough campaign.
Instead, El Mala has chosen to continue his development at the club where he established himself at the highest level.
Cologne's decision to keep him also carries a significant financial element.
The Bundesliga club reportedly had the opportunity to earn at least €50 million from El Mala's departure this summer. Such a deal would comfortably have represented the biggest sale in Cologne's history.
By agreeing a new contract until 2031, Cologne have effectively made a bet on El Mala's development. The club clearly believes his value could rise significantly if he continues producing at Bundesliga level.
His rapid progress suggests there is reason for such confidence.
El Mala's rise has been extraordinary. During the 2024/25 season, he was still playing in Germany's third tier.
Only one year later, he was competing regularly in the Bundesliga and quickly established himself as one of Cologne's most dangerous attacking players.
El Mala finished the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with 13 goals and five assists in 34 appearances, an outstanding return for a teenager experiencing his first campaign in Germany's top division.
His contribution became even more significant because Cologne endured a difficult season.
The club finished 14th in the Bundesliga, but El Mala emerged as one of the major positives from the campaign and played an important role in keeping their attack competitive.
His performances inevitably attracted attention from clubs with considerably greater financial resources.
Cologne were therefore faced with a familiar dilemma. They could accept an enormous transfer fee for a 19-year-old player or attempt to convince him that another season at the club would be better for his development.
For now, the second option has won.
The new five-year agreement strengthens Cologne's negotiating position considerably. If Europe's biggest clubs return for El Mala in future transfer windows, they will be dealing with a player tied to the German club until 2031 rather than a young talent approaching the end of his contract.
The No.10 shirt also indicates the role Cologne expects him to play.
After his breakthrough campaign, El Mala is no longer simply an exciting academy-age prospect. He enters the new season as one of the players expected to lead Cologne's attack.
Supporters will not have to wait long to see him wearing his new number.
Cologne begin their competitive season on Monday against Würzburger Kickers in the DFB Cup. Their Bundesliga campaign will then begin with a home match against Hoffenheim.
