Thomas Tuchel has unveiled his first England squad, featuring some unexpected selections, with Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford among the most notable inclusions.
Henderson, who has not played for England in two years, is now 35 years old and currently captains Ajax. Despite doubts over his selection, Tuchel firmly defended his decision, emphasizing the veteran midfielder’s importance to his project.
“Jordan is a serial winner and is the captain of Ajax. He brings leadership qualities, character, and energy. He makes sure that everyone in the team adheres to certain standards, and with these characteristics, he embodies everything I want to build here,” Tuchel explained.
Another surprise recall is Marcus Rashford, who has been struggling for game time at Manchester United but has impressed on loan at Aston Villa. Tuchel believes Rashford has shown the qualities needed to earn his place.
“He had a big impact at Aston Villa, especially as a substitute. He was impressive, very physical, and hard-working. He also added a lot in defense. I got the feeling that it would be worth calling him up and encouraging him to keep up that level of performance or not fall back into his old routines,” said Tuchel.
The former Chelsea, PSG, Bayern, and Dortmund coach will make his debut as England manager in exactly a week, as the Three Lions face Albania in a crucial World Cup qualifier.
