Former Chelsea star David Luiz has revealed he's been quietly treating baldness for years after a viral photo exposed a thinning patch that left fans stunned.

David Luiz, once known across the Premier League for his iconic curls, has opened up about his long-running battle with baldness after a viral photo of him playing for Fortaleza sparked surprise online.

The 38-year-old former Chelsea and Arsenal defender was captured during a recent match in Brazil with a visible bald spot on his head, leading fans to question whether the image was even real. Luiz, whose trademark hair once inspired wigs in the crowd, has now addressed the situation directly in a lighthearted video alongside his barber.

"Over the years, I've lost a little hair. I’ve treated baldness for many years," Luiz said. “I used to be a cap lover back in the beginning. Now it’s more difficult to leave the hair the way I liked—full of curls.”

Luiz removed his cap in the video, revealing that his hair was still long but noticeably thinner. “It was a lot more work too,” he admitted. “It became easier to just wear a cap.”

The barber, unfazed by the viral moment, reassured Luiz with a laugh, claiming there was still "huge potential" to keep his signature look. After a fresh haircut, Luiz beamed while checking for patches and jokingly asked, "Where did you stick the baldness!?"

The refreshed look sparked plenty of positive reactions, with both Luiz and his barber agreeing he looked younger than ever. "You’ve got a lot of football still ahead,” the barber concluded.

Luiz joined Fortaleza at the start of the 2025 season and has started all five league games so far. The Brazilian club currently sits 14th in Serie A, with five points from as many matches.
