Free agent Asmir Begovic is open to joining Wrexham, calling the club’s Hollywood-backed rise “an exciting project” and praising owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after watching their documentary.
Asmir Begovic has admitted he’s open to a move to Wrexham, calling the club's Hollywood-led revival “a really interesting project” as the Red Dragons prepare for life in the Championship.
The 38-year-old former Premier League goalkeeper is a free agent after leaving Everton and is exploring new opportunities. A potential deal with Wrexham has been floated, and Begovic has now publicly addressed the speculation.
Speaking to Fruity King, the veteran shot-stopper said: “Wrexham is a really interesting project, both on the pitch and everything that comes with it. I like working with good people and having watched the documentary, the owners seem like amazing guys. That is the sort of club I’d love to work with.”
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have turned Wrexham into a global football story through their hit documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, and Begovic says that visibility and the people involved are appealing factors.
“If it’s the right situation for everyone then who knows, it’s an exciting project,” he added, while confirming he is awaiting an official approach from the club.
Should he join, Begovic would likely provide back-up to 23-year-old Arthur Okonkwo, the former Arsenal academy keeper who is expected to remain first-choice under Phil Parkinson. Wrexham are looking to bolster their goalkeeping options ahead of the new season following injury concerns in recent years.
