Veljko Vučetić following controversy over a social media post in which his father praised convicted war criminal
Ratko Mladić.
Screenshots circulated publicly showing Vučetić's father sharing a photograph of Mladić following his death, accompanied by the message "Thank you for everything, General" and a hashtag bearing Mladić's name.
The post triggered criticism among Sarajevo supporters and the wider public in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Several Bosnian media outlets subsequently reported that it prompted the club's academy to end its association with the young goalkeeper.
Sarajevo confirm Vučetić's departure
Sarajevo's academy reacted with a brief public statement confirming that Vučetić was leaving the club.
"The FK Sarajevo Academy informs the public that Veljko Vučetić is no longer a member of the academy as of today," the club said.
The academy did not detail the circumstances in that short statement, but local reports directly linked the decision to the controversy surrounding the father's social media post.
The episode attracted particular attention because Sarajevo was among the cities that suffered heavily during the 1992-95 Bosnian War, including a prolonged siege conducted by Bosnian Serb forces commanded by Mladić.
Mladić died in The Hague
Mladić died on August 27, 2026, while serving a life sentence in United Nations custody in The Hague.
The former commander of the Bosnian Serb army was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed. His life sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021.
He was also convicted over crimes connected to the siege of Sarajevo, during which thousands of civilians were killed. His death has again highlighted deep divisions in the region over his legacy, with tributes from some Serb nationalists contrasting sharply with reactions from survivors and victims' families.
For FK Sarajevo, the controversy quickly became a matter extending beyond football, with the academy deciding that Vučetić would no longer remain part of the club.
