UEFA removed referee Fabio Maresca from a Champions League match after he was accused of threatening a player with death during a match in Kuwait.
UEFA has announced that it has urgently removed Italian referee Fabio Maresca from today's Champions League match between PSV and Sporting in Eindhoven.
Maresca was supposed to be the fourth official, but he was taken off the list after allegedly threatening a player with death during a Kuwait Premier League match between Kuwait SC and Al Arabi. Maresca was publicly accused of making the threats, and UEFA reacted swiftly by removing him from the Champions League match list.
His place will be filled by his compatriot Daniele Doveri. The main referee for the match between PSV and Sporting will be Marco Guida, with assistants Ciro Carbone and Giorgio Peretti. Last season, Maresca officiated a Croatian Cup match between Dinamo and Hajduk in Poljud.
