Xabi Alonso is set to become the new manager of Chelsea after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement with his famous phrase, “Here we go.”
After weeks of speculation, the move is now reportedly fully agreed, with Alonso expected to sign a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The Spanish coach has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid in January following a disappointing defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.
Questions remain over the exact circumstances of his departure from Madrid. Some reports suggested president Florentino Perez dismissed him, while others claimed Alonso chose to step away himself.
Recent events inside the Real dressing room have only added to the feeling that tensions were growing behind the scenes. Reports last week claimed midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni clashed twice during internal disputes at the club.
Following a four-month break from coaching, Alonso quickly became one of the most wanted managers on the market.
Liverpool were strongly linked with the Spaniard after criticism increased around coach Arne Slot, but the Premier League club ultimately decided to continue with the Dutchman.
Chelsea then moved decisively to secure Alonso as the long-term leader of their latest rebuild.
The appointment would mark the fourth coaching role of Alonso’s career. He previously coached Real Sociedad B, then enjoyed huge success with Bayer Leverkusen before taking charge of Real Madrid.
Chelsea believes Alonso’s tactical ideas, authority, and experience at elite clubs make him the ideal figure to guide one of Europe’s youngest squads.
