Flamengo goalkeeper Agustin Rossi survived a terrifying armed robbery attempt early Wednesday morning after his armoured car was hit by gunfire in Rio de Janeiro.

The incident took place on the Linha Amarela expressway, near the Bonsucesso neighbourhood, as players returned from a Copa Libertadores match against Central Córdoba in Argentina.

Rossi’s vehicle was hit by four bullets, but thanks to the car's armoured plating, no one was injured. The attackers fled the scene without stealing anything.

Flamengo issued a statement confirming the details: “Upon arriving back in Rio de Janeiro at around 5:30 am, returning home after a match in Argentina for the CONMEBOL Libertadores, two cars carrying Flamengo players were targeted in an attempted robbery on the Yellow Line, near the Bonsucesso area. The vehicle carrying goalkeeper Rossi, which is bulletproof, was struck by four gunshots.”

“Despite the severity of the incident, the attempted robbery was unsuccessful, and none of the players or passengers in the vehicles were injured. All those involved have since returned to their homes.”

Rossi, 29, joined Flamengo in July 2023 and has quickly established himself as a key figure between the posts for the Brazilian club. The Argentine keeper previously played for Boca Juniors.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the attempted robbery.
