Flamengo dismissed Filipe Luís despite an 8-0 victory and multiple recent trophies, ending a short but trophy-laden spell that included the 2025 Copa Libertadores title.
Flamengo have stunned Brazilian football by dismissing Filipe Luís only hours after an emphatic 8-0 win over Madureira and qualification for the Carioca Championship final.
The club board decided to end the partnership due to what they described as a poor start to the new season.
In an official statement, Flamengo confirmed the departure.
"Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the team as of Tuesday. Assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares are also leaving the club. Flamengo thanks Filipe Luís for all his achievements and wishes him success in his future career."
The decision feels drastic. Filipe Luís led the team in 101 matches, recording 63 wins, 23 draws and 15 defeats, a 69.9 percent success rate. Five of those losses came in 2026.
His trophy haul was impressive:
2024 Copa do Brasil
2025 Supercopa do Brasil
2025 Campeonato Carioca
2025 Copa Libertadores
2025 Brazilian Championship
He left as one of the most decorated coaches in club history, level on trophy count with Jorge Jesus and Flávio Costa.
His rise was rapid. After starting with the under-17 side, he won a world title with the under-20s and took charge of the senior team in September 2024 following Tite’s exit. The peak came with the Libertadores triumph, yet 2026 brought setbacks, including defeats in the Super Cup against Corinthians and the Recopa against Lanús.
Now attention turns to Europe. Filipe Luís built a strong bond with Atlético Madrid during his playing career, and Spanish media have repeatedly linked him as a potential long-term successor to Diego Simeone.
For Flamengo, the timing raises questions. For Filipe Luís, the next chapter may arrive sooner than expected.
