McKenzie Dicicco, a 22-year-old footballer from Middlesbrough, has been charged with the murder of fellow player James Hitchcock.
The incident occurred at York Railway Station on Sunday evening, and Hitchcock tragically passed away on Wednesday with his family by his side.
Dicicco, a forward who has played for several non-league clubs in North Yorkshire and Teesside, is accused of fatally injuring 28-year-old James Hitchcock, a goalkeeper for non-league club Barton FC. Hitchcock previously played for Scarborough Athletic FC and Bridlington Town FC.
Dicicco also faces an additional charge of affray related to the violent incident. He appeared in custody at York Magistrates' Court, where the case was referred to Leeds Crown Court for a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday, December 20.
During the brief appearance at York Magistrates' Court, Dicicco spoke only to confirm his name and address. No plea was entered for the charges of murder or affray. The court noted that bail decisions for murder charges are solely within the jurisdiction of a crown court or High Court judge.
Dicicco was remanded in custody pending the crown court proceedings. Members of his family were present in the public gallery during the hearing.
James Hitchcock, remembered as a talented goalkeeper and valued teammate, leaves behind a grieving football community and family. His death has sent shockwaves through non-league football circles, with tributes pouring in from Barton FC, Scarborough Athletic FC, and Bridlington Town FC.
