Fortaleza signs veteran defender David Luiz on a free transfer after his Flamengo departure. The former Chelsea star joins until 2026, with an option to extend.

Fortaleza has officially announced the signing of veteran defender David Luiz, who joins the club on a free transfer after his contract with Flamengo was not renewed. The 37-year-old center-back has signed a deal until the end of 2026, with an option to extend for an additional year.

The transfer speculation surrounding David Luiz and Fortaleza has finally materialized, with the experienced defender choosing the Brazilian Serie A side despite receiving financially superior offers from other clubs. His decision was influenced by the club's ambitious project and his desire to return to the Northeast region of Brazil, having previously played for Vitória early in his career.

"We are very pleased to welcome David Luiz, a world-class player who has won titles wherever he has played," said Fortaleza CEO Marcelo Paz. "Despite receiving better financial proposals, he chose Fortaleza because he believes in our project and aligns with our values."

David Luiz, who spent last season with Flamengo, made 36 appearances and scored three goals. He brings with him a wealth of experience from his 14-year career in European football, having played for Benfica, Chelsea, PSG, and Arsenal.

The Brazilian defender will return to the iconic Castelão Stadium, where he famously scored a crucial goal for Brazil against Colombia in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, securing the team's spot in the semifinals.

Among his many achievements, David Luiz has lifted prestigious trophies, including the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 and the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2022.
