Stephane Omeonga, the former Hibernian and Livingston footballer now playing for Israeli club Bnei Sakhnin, has shared distressing footage of his removal from a flight by Italian police on Christmas Day.
The incident occurred as Omeonga was boarding a flight from Rome to Tel Aviv, reportedly following an air steward's query about his travel documents.
The 28-year-old Belgian player posted the video on Instagram, showing him pleading with police officers, identifying himself as a “Belgian citizen” and a “football player.” In the footage, police are seen handcuffing Omeonga, prompting him to exclaim, “What are you doing? Are you insane?” before being forcibly removed from the plane. The video shows further struggles, including an officer wrapping his arms around Omeonga's neck as he is escorted off the flight.
In a detailed statement, Omeonga recounted his experience, alleging that after being removed from the plane, police violently threw him to the ground, pressed a knee to his head, and handcuffed him. He added, “Once outside the aircraft, away from the view of witnesses, the police beat me, leaving me in a state of shock.” He claimed he was later taken to a holding room without food or water for hours and has yet to receive any explanation for his arrest.
“As a human being and a father, I cannot tolerate any form of discrimination. This arrest is just the visible tip of the iceberg. Many people who look like me cannot find work, housing, or participate in sports they love, simply because they are Black,” Omeonga said.
Support from Fellow Footballers
Several footballers have voiced their support for Omeonga. Former Hibs and Livingston player Marvin Bartley expressed his frustration: “Words fail me! Going into 2025, my small wish is that everyone is treated the same all around the world… I hope you’re well and, more importantly, safe, brother.”
Former Brighton midfielder Beram Kayal also added: “Love, brother. Hope you’re okay and feeling good. I’m sure you’re strong and will keep fighting for the good in this life.”
A Call for Justice
Omeonga’s story has sparked conversations about police conduct and systemic racism. The Daily Star has reached out to Flyyo airlines, Rome’s airport authority, and Omeonga for further comments on the incident. Meanwhile, the footballer remains resolute in his pursuit of accountability and justice.
