Mark Bosnich ruptured his quadriceps while saving a penalty during a promotional event and now faces surgery ahead of his World Cup punditry duties.

Mark Bosnich expected a promotional penalty shoot-out in Sydney to be routine. Instead, the former Manchester United goalkeeper left needing hospital treatment and surgery.
The 54-year-old suffered a ruptured quadriceps muscle while taking part in a celebrity event ahead of his planned work covering the World Cup for Australian broadcaster Stan Sports.
The injury happened while making a save
During the event, Bosnich went in goal while several well-known guests took penalties.
The former Australia international produced an impressive save from ex-AFL chief Gillon McLachlan, diving low to stop the effort.
Immediately afterward, Bosnich cried out in pain.
Although he initially managed to limp toward a chair and receive treatment with ice, the injury quickly proved more serious than first expected.
He later required a trip to the hospital, where the full extent of the damage became clear.
Surgery now required
Bosnich later confirmed to Australian outlet Nine that surgery will be necessary.
Despite the setback, the former goalkeeper remained relaxed about the situation.
"I'll be right."
Several people attending the event originally thought Bosnich might have been joking.
McLachlan joked afterward:
"I hit it flush. He overreacted."
Former Socceroos striker Archie Thompson also admitted he initially doubted the seriousness.
"I kept expecting him to get back up."
"I'm hoping it's a stitch-up. If it is, his acting is incredible."
A Premier League career and World Cup plans
Bosnich played more than 200 Premier League matches across spells with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea between 1990 and 2003.
He was also part of the United squad that won the Premier League title in 1999-2000.
Now, instead of preparing quietly for World Cup coverage duties, Bosnich faces recovery and rehabilitation after an injury nobody expected from a simple penalty shoot-out.
