Jeremie Frimpong is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United among his potential destinations.
Bayer Leverkusen’s dynamic full-back Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly planning to move on at the end of the season, according to Sky Germany.
The 24-year-old Dutchman was instrumental in Leverkusen’s remarkable 2023/24 campaign, during which Xabi Alonso’s team went unbeaten in domestic competitions, securing the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. However, their Europa League final defeat to Atalanta was the only blemish on an otherwise historic season.
Tactical shift reduces Frimpong’s influence
Frimpong was a key starter last season, thriving as a right wing-back and providing pace and attacking threat down the flank. However, in the current campaign, Alonso has shifted to a back four, pushing Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo further upfield as wingers.
This tactical adjustment has not suited Grimaldo, while Frimpong has faced stiff competition from Nathan Tella, who has been pushing for more playing time. Additionally, injuries have disrupted Frimpong’s season, further limiting his impact.
Top European clubs monitoring his situation
With big clubs circling, Frimpong could be set for a high-profile summer transfer. While Manchester United has been linked with the Dutch international, Sky Germany reports that his preferred destinations are Real Madrid or Barcelona.
Frimpong remains under contract until 2028, meaning Leverkusen could demand a hefty transfer fee for one of their most sought-after players.
Currently, Leverkusen sits second in the Bundesliga table with 53 points, trailing Bayern Munich by eight.
