Gennaro Gattuso has wasted no time stamping his authority on Lazio, with the fiery Italian coach involved in a heated confrontation during Thursday's training session.
According to reports from Italy, tensions flared at Lazio's Formello training complex when Dutch midfielder Kenneth Taylor became frustrated after a challenge from one of his teammates.
The 24-year-old reacted by complaining during the session, prompting Gattuso to stop training. Moments later, Taylor reportedly exchanged words with his coach, a reaction that immediately triggered Gattuso's response.
The former AC Milan midfielder pointed toward the dressing room and ordered Taylor to leave the pitch immediately. The Dutch international complied without further incident, avoiding an even bigger confrontation.
Gattuso has built his reputation throughout his career on discipline, intensity and demanding maximum commitment from every player. Those qualities made him one of Italy's fiercest midfielders, and they continue to define his coaching style.
Taylor is one of Lazio's most valuable players. The midfielder, currently valued at around €25 million, joined the Roman club from Ajax during the January transfer window in a deal worth just under €17 million.
Despite the incident, Taylor remains an important member of Gattuso's squad and is also a regular part of the Netherlands national team setup.
There has been no official statement from Lazio regarding possible disciplinary action, but the expectation in Italy is that the disagreement will be resolved internally before the start of the new season.
The episode nevertheless offers another reminder that Gattuso remains one of football's most demanding personalities, unwilling to tolerate a lack of discipline even from his biggest stars.
