Gerard Piqué has suggested a radical change to football’s scoring system in an attempt to eliminate 0-0 results, arguing that teams should receive no points if a match ends without goals.
The retired Barcelona and Spain defender shared his idea on Iker Casillas’ podcast, insisting that such a rule would encourage attacking play and improve the overall entertainment value of the game.
“It can't be that you go to a football stadium, spend €100, €200 or €300 and the match ends 0-0. Something has to change,” Piqué stated.
Under the current system, teams receive one point each for a draw, but Piqué believes scrapping this in the event of a goalless match would force teams to take more risks.
“A proposal to consider would be that if the match ends 0-0, the teams don't get a point. In the 70th minute, the match would open up,” he explained.
The idea has already sparked debate, with some supporting the move to discourage defensive football, while others argue that not every 0-0 result is due to negative tactics. Whether football’s governing bodies take Piqué’s suggestion seriously remains to be seen.
