Serbia winger Veljko Birmančević has joined Getafe on loan from Sparta Prague, earning a long-awaited opportunity to prove himself in La Liga.
Serbian international Veljko Birmančević has secured a major opportunity in his career after completing a move to Getafe.
Birmančević joins the La Liga side on loan from Sparta Prague, with Getafe holding an option to make the transfer permanent. It will be the first time in his career that the winger plays in Spain.
“Blue is your new colour,” Getafe wrote while unveiling the deal, accompanied by a promotional video featuring the Serbian tricolour flying above the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium.
Back in Europe’s elite
The move marks Birmančević’s return to one of Europe’s so-called “big five” leagues, having previously played in Ligue 1 with Toulouse.
His professional journey began at Partizan, but he truly made his name at Čukarički. From there, his career took him to Malmö, then France, and later the Czech Republic, where he became an important attacking figure for Sparta Prague.
A familiar destination for Serbian players
Getafe is a club with a strong Serbian connection. Over the years, several notable Serbian players have worn the club’s shirt, including current national team head coach Veljko Paunović, as well as Vladimir Stojković, Stefan Mitrović, Stefan Šćepović and Nemanja Maksimović.
Strong numbers in Prague
During the current season, Birmančević recorded eight goals and four assists in 27 appearances for Sparta Prague, underlining his attacking contribution. At international level, he has earned 13 caps for Serbia.
For Birmančević, the move to Getafe represents both a fresh challenge and a long-awaited chance to establish himself in La Liga — a stage that could redefine the next phase of his career.
