Liverpool players will travel to Portugal on Saturday to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died in a car crash on their way to rejoin the club.

Liverpool players will travel to Portugal this weekend to say their final goodbye to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car accident earlier this week. According to ESPN, several members of the squad will attend the funeral on Saturday.

The two brothers lost their lives on Wednesday night in northern Spain while driving to Santander, where they planned to take a ferry back to England. Jota was due to report for Liverpool’s pre-season training on Monday.

The funeral will take place at the Matriz Church in Gondomar, a suburb of Porto and Jota’s hometown, where his family still lives. The service will follow a private mourning gathering with close friends and family on Friday evening.

Gondomar holds deep significance for Jota. It is where he grew up, began his footballing journey, and built his life before becoming a star at clubs like Paços de Ferreira, Wolves, and Liverpool. The community is preparing for an emotional farewell.

Several Liverpool teammates, including Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk, have already paid tribute online, expressing their heartbreak and admiration for Jota as both a footballer and a person.

"Absolutely devastated," Robertson wrote. "One of the kindest, most humble people I’ve shared a pitch with."

Manager Arne Slot and the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group also released statements mourning the tragic loss and offering full support to Jota’s family.

Out of respect, Liverpool have postponed the start of their pre-season training, originally scheduled for Monday. The club has also made arrangements to support the players traveling to Portugal for the funeral.

This weekend, the Liverpool family will come together in grief and remembrance, honouring not just a teammate, but a friend whose life was cut heartbreakingly short.
