Jack Grealish slammed online criticism of Raheem Sterling after his Feyenoord debut, urging respect as the former Chelsea winger rebuilds match fitness in the Eredivisie.
Jack Grealish has publicly defended Raheem Sterling after online criticism followed the winger’s debut for Feyenoord.
Sterling made his first competitive appearance in more than nine months during a 2-1 win over Telstar. The former Chelsea and Manchester City attacker joined the Dutch side on a free transfer but had to wait for work permit clearance before stepping onto the pitch.
After the match, Sterling told ESPN:
"Been a great introduction. Haven't played in a little bit, but just trying to keep fit. Been with the team now for a little bit, so it's all about building step by step and getting to match fitness. Good to start your first game with a win."
Despite the positive result, an Instagram account criticised his performance, questioning his decline and motivation.
Grealish responded directly:
"What a f*****g stupid Instagram post man, what's wrong with you guys. Guy hasn't played or trained for so long. Ppl like you are what's wrong with the world. Have some respect."
Robin van Persie, now coaching Feyenoord, has already warned that Sterling needs time. He highlighted the winger’s quality in training but stressed careful management after months without competitive football.
"How match-fit are you after not playing for six months? We have to be careful with him. He needs time to play 90 minutes. We'll build him up responsibly."
Feyenoord sit second in the Eredivisie, five points clear of NEC but trailing leaders PSV by 14. Sterling’s short-term deal runs until the end of the season, and he hopes to reignite his career in Rotterdam.
He will look for more minutes against Twente as he works toward full sharpness.
