Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise — and a touch of caution — after Rayan Cherki’s dazzling assist in the 3–0 victory over Sunderland. The 21-year-old French forward produced a stunning piece of skill before setting up Phil Foden for City’s third goal, a moment that went viral across social media.
Guardiola, known for his perfectionism, admired Cherki’s flair but made it clear that such moves must always serve a purpose. “It’s not all about technique. Messi never passed a pass like that, but he’s the best of all time,” said Guardiola. “Crosses are fine — left-footed, right-footed, headed… I don’t care as long as the pass is effective. I like simple moves because Messi never made a mistake with them, never — not even after beating four players.”
Guardiola stressed that the foundation of his footballing philosophy remains precision and fundamentals. “I want my players to do the basics well. When you master that, you can try everything else. Some players have a special talent from their mother and father — they can do practically anything they want, as long as it works. If it doesn’t, we’ll quickly have problems,” added the Catalan coach.
Cherki shining after Lyon switch Rayan Cherki, who joined Manchester City from Lyon this summer for around €40 million, has quickly made an impression. With two assists against Sunderland, he now has five goal involvements in his first Premier League season. His contract with City runs until June 2030, and Guardiola’s faith in his potential seems to be growing match by match.
