Last season, Joshua Zirkzee was Bologna’s hero in helping the club qualify for the Champions League, but this summer, he had to choose his next destination. He picked Old Trafford, much to the dismay of Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.
Last season, Bologna was a pleasant surprise in Italy’s Serie A. The iconic club not only impressed, but also secured a place in this season’s Champions League, a huge achievement for the club based at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium.
The standout player of that Bologna team was Zirkzee, whose performances caught the attention of top European clubs. It was clear that the Dutch forward could choose his next destination, and he opted for Manchester United.
Zirkzee scored on his debut for the Red Devils, but hasn’t found the back of the net since August. After nine appearances for Manchester United, the 23-year-old has only one goal to his name.
"Zirkzee should have chosen Milan, not Manchester United. He knows Serie A, and a few more seasons in a top club like Milan would have certainly helped his career development. Now he’s in a situation where the team has many problems, and that’s hindering his progress. He’s a great player, but it will be tough for him to succeed in a club that’s struggling so much right now," said legendary Dutch footballer Ruud Gullit.
Gullit’s assessment is, to some extent, subjective, given that he himself once shone in a Milan shirt.
