Women’s league match in Mexico suspended after gunfire erupts outside stadium during clashes between security forces and cartel members.

A women’s football match in Mexico was temporarily suspended after gunfire erupted outside the stadium during violent clashes between security forces and cartel members.

The incident occurred during the second half of the game between Necaxa Femenil and Querétaro Femenil at the Estadio Victoria. The referee halted play and ordered players to return to the dressing rooms after bursts of automatic gunfire were heard near the venue.

Security protocol activated

The shots were reportedly linked to confrontations between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and Mexican security forces following the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”.

Authorities activated emergency safety protocols to ensure the protection of players, officials and spectators. The suspension lasted approximately 15 minutes, with teams remaining near the tunnel area until the situation outside the stadium was stabilised.

The match eventually resumed and concluded without further incident, with Necaxa securing a 2-1 victory.

Wider unrest

Violence has spread across several Mexican states following the killing of the cartel leader. Reports indicate that vehicles were set on fire, barricades erected and attacks launched against security forces.

Fuel stations, restaurants and shops were set ablaze in some areas, while residents were advised to remain indoors as authorities attempted to restore order. Multiple security personnel were reportedly injured during the clashes.

The unrest casts a shadow over Mexico’s preparations to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada. Mexico’s men’s national team are scheduled to play a friendly against Iceland in March as part of their tournament build-up.

Local authorities are also reviewing the feasibility of hosting upcoming intercontinental qualification matches, with concerns about security conditions in affected regions.
