Harry Kane could break Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga scoring record after a stunning start at Bayern Munich, with club legend Mario Basler backing the England captain.
Harry Kane is being tipped to break Robert Lewandowski’s long-standing Bundesliga goalscoring record, with his explosive form at Bayern Munich placing him firmly on course for history.
The England captain has already scored 18 goals in just 14 league games this season, a strike rate that would see him surpass Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals set during the 2020–21 campaign.
Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 as the club’s all-time top scorer, having netted 280 goals for Spurs. The move marked a fresh challenge — and a clear pursuit of long-awaited major silverware.
That long-running narrative was finally put to rest in 2024–25, when Kane lifted the Bundesliga title for the first time. He has since added German Super Cup success, with more domestic and European honours firmly in Bayern’s sights.
Bayern remain unbeaten at the top of the table, sitting on 38 points and holding a commanding nine-point lead. Kane’s goals have been central to that dominance, taking his overall Bayern tally to 114 goals in 120 appearances.
The 32-year-old has already registered three hat-tricks this season and is averaging 1.29 goals per game. Over a full 34-match campaign, that pace would project to 43.7 goals — enough to eclipse Lewandowski’s benchmark.
Kane scored 36 Bundesliga goals in his debut season and is now targeting at least five more this time around, a feat that would carve his name into Bayern and league history.
Mario Basler, a former Bayern midfielder and club legend, believes Kane has what it takes to go beyond Lewandowski’s achievements.
“I think Harry Kane is a different kind of player. Lewandowski wasn’t the type who worked so hard defensively. Harry Kane does that,” Basler told Absolut Fussball.
“Kane drops deep, wins the ball and distributes it. I believe he has a chance to break the goalscoring record this season. For me, he is an exceptional striker and the player of the year.”
Lewandowski’s record was achieved in just 29 games, with the Polish striker missing several matchdays through injury as he surpassed Gerd Müller’s historic mark.
“I thought to myself that I’d scored 41 goals in 29 games that season,” Lewandowski later reflected. “That’s the figure I had in mind. I appreciate the record even more in that context.”
Kane most recently scored a late penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw against Mainz, a goal that marked his 50th club strike of the calendar year — a milestone he has reached for the first time in his career.
The last Bayern player to achieve that feat was Lewandowski, who scored 58 goals in 2021.
Kane’s current return of 18 goals in 14 games also matches a joint Bundesliga record — equalling his own tally from the 2023–24 season.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has been quick to praise the striker’s mentality and all-round influence.
“For a coach, it’s incredible to have such an all-round professional who is obsessed with scoring and performing week in, week out,” Kompany said. “It’s the whole package that makes him so valuable.”
Kane, who is also England’s all-time leading scorer with 78 goals, will return to action on Sunday when Bayern travel to Heidenheim, their final fixture before the winter break.
