Mark Hateley says Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich showed elite judgement as Tottenham struggled after his departure.
Harry Kane’s decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich looked controversial at the time, but former England international Mark Hateley believes the striker saw warning signs before everyone else.
Kane completed his move to Bayern in 2023 in a deal worth around €100 million and has since collected trophies while continuing his extraordinary goalscoring numbers in Germany.
Meanwhile, his former club has endured a difficult period, increasing discussion around whether the striker chose exactly the right moment to leave north London.
Speaking to Get German Football News, Hateley suggested Kane’s football intelligence helped him recognise deeper issues behind the scenes.
" As someone intelligent, he could see what was going on at Tottenham in the background."
"What's unfolded this season has been rumbling from the period that Harry was there until the time he left."
"You get a sense of feeling when you are as intelligent as Harry is, he probably sniffed out the problems."
Hateley believes Kane’s priorities extended beyond loyalty and focused on achieving success during the peak years of his career.
"They would have given him whatever he wanted to stay at the football club, but when you're a professional footballer, you want to come away with something."
"You want trophies and more knowledge than when you started the game. I think at Spurs, he was never going to do that. Right time, right move."
At Bayern Munich, Kane has continued performing at elite level and remains one of Europe’s most productive attackers.
Hateley also rejected the idea that age will slow the England captain down anytime soon.
"Harry Kane will play for years. He's super intelligent and super fit."
"He adjusts his game, a bit like Alan Shearer did. Harry doesn't only score goals, he creates, moves defenders and opens spaces for teammates."
The former striker also expects Bayern to keep Kane for the long term.
"I can't see Harry leaving Bayern this year at all."
At 32, Kane remains central to both Bayern Munich’s ambitions and England’s plans heading into the next major international cycle.
For Hateley, the story now looks simple: Kane did not abandon Tottenham too early. He left exactly when he needed to.
