Harvey Elliott admits he may need to leave Liverpool to grow as a player, saying at 22 he can't afford to lose valuable career time.

Harvey Elliott has hinted at a potential departure from Liverpool, admitting he must consider his future despite his affection for the club. The 22-year-old made headlines last season with a dramatic winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but consistent first-team minutes remain elusive.

“I’ll need to talk to the club. I’m 22 now—next season I’ll be 23. I don’t want to lose years, because a career is short. I need to think carefully about whether I’m satisfied with my current role and how I can develop as a player, because that’s what matters most,” Elliott told reporters following his appearance with England's U21 team.

“I just want to be the best version of myself. If that means moving elsewhere, then I’ll have to do that,” he added.

Despite 53 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool in 2023/24, Elliott started only 27 times, and just twice in the Premier League—both after the Reds had already clinched the title. In stark contrast, he started only six games the season before, recording 822 minutes, five goals, and three assists.

“It’s not that I want to leave. I love this club, I love the fans, I love this team. I support them too. But this is about my career,” Elliott said. “After the PSG goal, I hoped it would be a turning point. But we all know who the boss is. Arne Slot led us to the title with his decisions, so I can’t complain.”

With Florian Wirtz expected to join from Bayer Leverkusen in what could be a record-breaking deal, Elliott’s future at Anfield looks increasingly uncertain. Liverpool may look to include Elliott in negotiations to bring the German star to Merseyside, especially with Leverkusen demanding €150 million for their prized asset.
