Héctor Herrera returns to Liga MX, signing with Toluca for Clausura 2025. The former El Tri star brings experience from Europe and MLS to the Diablos Rojos.
Héctor Herrera has officially returned to Mexican football, signing with Toluca after 12 years playing abroad. The 34-year-old midfielder, once a key figure in the Mexican national team, joins the Diablos Rojos as a marquee addition to bolster their squad for the Clausura 2025 tournament.
Toluca welcomed Herrera through their social media channels with a fiery post: “There’s a new devil in hell. Welcome, Héctor Herrera!” The club, one of the most successful in Mexico with 10 league titles, is banking on Herrera’s experience to help them reclaim championship glory.
Herrera’s football journey began at Pachuca, where he rose through the youth ranks before debuting professionally. In 2013, he moved to Porto, where he became team captain, winning a Primeira Liga title and two Super Cups over six seasons.
In 2019, Herrera signed with Atlético Madrid, where he contributed to the club’s 2020-2021 La Liga title. He later joined Houston Dynamo in 2022, achieving success with a 2023 U.S. Open Cup victory. However, his stint in MLS ended controversially after he was expelled during the playoffs for spitting at a referee, leading to the club’s decision not to renew his contract.
A veteran of three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, Herrera has been a stalwart for El Tri, representing his nation with distinction throughout his career.
Herrera’s signing coincides with a managerial change at Toluca, as Antonio Mohamed takes the helm, replacing Portuguese coach Renato Paiva. After being eliminated in last year’s quarterfinals by Club América, Toluca is determined to challenge for the Liga MX title.
