Liverpool transformed their season after the winter, turning a major defensive flaw into a strength. Arne Slot’s team now chases third place with the league’s best post winter defensive record.
Liverpool have changed the course of their season under Arne Slot, correcting one of the biggest weaknesses in their game and reigniting their push for a top three Premier League finish.
The defending champions struggled badly in the opening months of the campaign. Between August and December 2025, Liverpool conceded three goals from stoppage time situations, the worst record in the league during that stretch.
Late defensive lapses cost them points and momentum. Their title defence stalled before the winter break, and doubts started to grow around consistency and focus in decisive moments.
Everything shifted after January 2026.
Since the restart, Liverpool have scored nine goals following stoppages, the highest number in the Premier League during that period. The same phase of the season brought only two defeats, showing clear tactical balance and improved game management.
Arne Slot tightened the structure between midfield and defence. The pressing became more coordinated, and the team stopped conceding cheap chances in transition. Small adjustments produced measurable results.
The table reflects that progress. Liverpool sit fifth, three points behind Aston Villa in third place, with ten rounds remaining.
The upcoming schedule will test their momentum. They travel to Wolverhampton in the league, face the same opponent in the FA Cup, then head to Turkey for a Europa League round of 16 clash against Galatasaray.
At the same time, direct rivals Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace continue to fight for European spots, increasing the pressure in the final stretch.
If the post winter trend continues, Liverpool have a realistic path toward the Champions League places. The key difference is clear. They no longer lose control in decisive moments. They dictate them.
