Aitana Bonmatí, the Spanish midfield maestro and two-time Ballon d'Or winner, recently opened up about the pivotal role her father played in preventing her from quitting football during one of the most challenging periods of her career. Speaking to the official page of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Bonmatí reflected on her journey, from moments of doubt to becoming one of the best players in the world.

"Football is practically my life," said the Barcelona star. Known for her "ambitious and warrior-like" mentality, Bonmatí revealed that her career almost took a different path.

A turning point

During a particularly difficult phase, the idea of quitting football weighed heavily on Bonmatí. "I couldn’t see a goal or a purpose. I wanted to give it all up," she admitted. However, her father intervened at a critical moment, offering the support and encouragement she needed.

"My father insisted that I continue. He wouldn’t let me quit, and thanks to him, I’m here today. Now, when I look back, I see it was all worth it," Bonmatí shared.

Gratitude and growth

Reflecting on her journey, Bonmatí expressed immense gratitude for the tough moments that shaped her: "We all have bad times in life, and as footballers, it feels like the world is ending when things don’t go well. But I’m thankful for those moments—they made me stronger."

Bonmatí also acknowledged how those struggles helped her evolve both as a person and a player. "In the past, I was very impatient—I wanted everything quickly, right now. But over time, working my way into starting lineups at Barcelona and the national team, I’ve become the player I am today."

She also credited her teammates for her success: "Who would have thought years ago that I’d win two Ballon d’Ors? I’m lucky to have amazing players around me who make me better every day."

As Bonmatí prepares for Spain's upcoming match against South Korea, she reflects on the profound impact football has had on her life. "People say football takes a lot away from you, but it gives back so much more. The process of earning my spot gradually has been invaluable. It’s shaped who I am, and I’m forever grateful for it."

From near-retirement to global stardom, Aitana Bonmatí's story is a testament to resilience, family support, and the pursuit of excellence.
