Is this Manchester City's worst season since the UAE takeover?

Manchester City suffered their ninth Premier League defeat of the season, equalling Pep Guardiola’s worst-ever league record.

he last time City lost this many matches in a single campaign was in 2019/20, when they finished second behind Liverpool. However, with several games still to play, Guardiola could be on the verge of setting an unwanted new personal record.

More significantly, City is now just one defeat away from recording their worst league season since the club’s takeover by Sheikh Mansour in 2008. The club, which has enjoyed unprecedented success under Abu Dhabi ownership, has never endured a campaign this poor in the modern era.

Top-four race tighter than ever

The reigning champions’ latest defeat to Nottingham Forest has put their top-four spot in jeopardy. Forest is now four points ahead in third place, while Chelsea sits just one point behind City with a chance to overtake them if they win their next match. Newcastle and Brighton are also closing in, just three points behind, making the final stretch of the season a tense battle for Champions League qualification.

City’s struggles this season have been unexpected, and if results don’t improve soon, they could end up missing out on the top four entirely—an unthinkable scenario under Guardiola’s reign.

With Chelsea playing tomorrow and Newcastle facing West Ham, City could drop even further down the table before their next match.
