Hansi Flick has openly addressed Marc-André ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona, confirming Joan García as first-choice goalkeeper and suggesting a difficult decision lies ahead.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has spoken candidly about the uncertain situation of Marc-André ter Stegen, making it clear that the long-serving goalkeeper must now decide his own future at the club.
The German coach confirmed once again that Joan García is currently Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, underlining a significant shift in the hierarchy at the Camp Nou.
Ter Stegen featured in just nine matches last season after suffering a serious knee injury, while the start of the current campaign was delayed by back surgery. Although he returned to match fitness earlier this month, he has remained on the bench for the last two games, with Flick continuing to trust García, who arrived in the summer from Espanyol.
Flick’s direct message
“It’s his decision. We have spoken about his situation,” Flick said. “I respect Marc a lot — he’s a fantastic goalkeeper and an important person for the team — but in the end he has to decide what he wants to do.”
The comments come at a sensitive moment for Ter Stegen, who is eager to remain in contention for Germany’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Regular playing time is considered crucial if he is to stay in the national team picture.
Past achievements offer no guarantees
Despite his vast experience — 422 appearances for Barcelona and 17 major trophies — Ter Stegen’s status no longer ensures minutes on the pitch. Even in the upcoming Copa del Rey tie against fourth-tier Guadalajara, his place between the posts is not guaranteed.
Flick explained that García will be rested ahead of the league match against Villarreal, but he has yet to decide whether the cup opportunity will go to Ter Stegen or Wojciech Szczęsny.
“We have three top goalkeepers,” Flick added. “I’m very happy with the level of competition.”
For Ter Stegen, the message from the Barcelona coach was unmistakably clear: past service alone will not define his role going forward.
