Ivan Rakitić believes Real Madrid made a big mistake by allowing Luka Modrić to leave, insisting the Croatian legend still had much to offer the club.
Ivan Rakitić believes Real Madrid made a major mistake when the club allowed Luka Modrić to leave last summer.
The former Croatia international shared the dressing room with Modrić for many years in the national team and remains convinced the legendary midfielder still belongs at the highest level.
According to Rakitić, the longevity of Modrić’s career is no accident but the result of exceptional discipline and professionalism.
"He is different from many players. His success is not accidental. He takes care of himself and prepares properly, and in the end, those who work hard deserve their rewards," said Rakitić.
The former Barcelona midfielder also highlighted the Croatian captain’s passion for football.
"He is happy, satisfied, and he enjoys football. That is the most important thing. We should enjoy watching him as long as possible."
Rakitić believes the decision to part ways with Modrić hurt not only Real Madrid, but also Spanish football in general.
"It was a big mistake not only for Real Madrid but also for Spanish football. I think much more effort should have been made to keep him there," he added.
Looking at the current situation in Madrid, the Croatian midfielder believes the coaching staff would still welcome the veteran playmaker.
"Considering how things are going in Madrid, I believe the coach would be happy to have him. It is a shame because people focus on age only when players get older. Luka proves football has no age limit."
For many fans across Europe, Luka Modrić remains one of the defining midfielders of modern football, and Rakitić clearly feels his story at Real Madrid should have lasted longer.
